While I can’t say that all members of the Macedonian Committees have bad intentions, it’s clear from studying the situation that, in practice, the Committees often forget their Christian values. Instead, they act more like political groups trying to gain power, using their religion as a cover for their political goals.
The Beginnings of the Committees
The Committees started with noble goals. Turkey had failed to meet its promises under the Treaty of Berlin, and the Bulgarian Christians in Macedonia faced persecution. These Christians crossed into Bulgaria, sharing their suffering, which led to raids by armed Bulgarian groups into Turkey. Over time, associations were created in Bulgaria, and secret committees were formed in Macedonia to support the Bulgarian cause. Eventually, the “High Committee” was formed to push for political autonomy for Macedonia, promising to take any necessary actions to achieve this goal A Plan Found in a Captured Bulgarian’s Clothing .
The Consequences for Bulgarians in Macedonia
As a result, peaceful Bulgarians in Macedonia were forced into the revolutionary movement. They had to secretly keep weapons, contribute money to support the “bands,” and faced execution if they reported to the Turkish authorities. Many were also killed by the Turks for being part of the revolution. Although the Turks had oppressed them, the revolutionary movement in Macedonia today is driven by fear and violence. While there are exceptions, the Bulgarian Macedonians often support the “bands” not because they truly believe in the cause, but because they fear being killed if they don’t.
The Harsh Treatment of Christians
The Turkish authorities treat the Christian population in Macedonia very poorly, contributing to the harsh situation Personal Istanbul Tours.
